Jumping Journal: July 16, 2006

Finally broke a personal best...Oh, not the kind you really want to break though.  Dang was it ever hot while jumping this afternoon, by far the hottest day I've ever jumped thus far.  Temps were into the 90's with sunny skies that didn't help it to feel any cooler out.

My plan wasn't to jump at all.  I went up to the hill to have a talk with Jon and I had a couple of questions I wanted to ask him.  Shortly after I arrived someone else showed up that I didn't know and didn't remember ever seeing before.  I guess he had did some jumping back last winter and had been out once earlier this spring.  He decided to do some hot jumping and that, well that...kinda forced me into jumping.  LOL!!!

Last week was just about as warm but it wasn't quite as noticeable since the sun spent most of the time behind the clouds.  Today the clouds were few and far in between and  from the top of the inrun it was darn hot.  The takeoff down through the outrun are nicely in the shade this time of the year at 3:30 in the afternoon.  That does help to give a little relief, especially when walking back up the landing hill and inrun.

The first went pretty decent other than not staying back until I had come to a complete stop at the end.  Same thing I did on the first jump last Sunday if I remember correctly.

The second jump was pretty decent as well.  As Cannonball told me afterward if I want the windows rolled down do it before I start down the inrun.  You could say I had the arms going around in nice big circles while in the air.  It does make you think of the motion you would use to roll down car windows before electric window became the norm.

The third jump was better as I was holding on and not letting the ankles come uncocked until the very end.  I would have stopped after three jumps but the other kids that was out was ready to head on up the 25 and give it his first jump and Cannonball wanted me to take him up.  I was quite content to do so.

The youngsters first went real well, he didn't try to stall up top like I have seen many first timers do.  He put on his skis and went down.  He did manage to forget to stay back until he stopped and he tried eating dirt like I did earlier in the day.

I took my fourth jump and everything seemed okay until about the time I hit the sawdust.  I could feel myself loosing my balance.  I ended up sliding sideways and staying upright at the same time.  The mother of the youngster afterwards ask me how I knew that I was about to loose it.  She saw me react and knew that I knew I was about to crash.  Fortunately, I did manage to stay up and only ended up turning sideways.  Heck, maybe you can hockey stop on sawdust, um???

One more jump for the day.  This time I decided the heck with it.  Let's see if I can get off my butt and managed to actually jump through the heel at the takeoff instead of jumping the way I always jump.  It sure did seem like I must have jumped through the heel as I made it way more out ove the skis than I have in a long time.  It may have been my imagination as well.

Five jumps on a day of 90+ degree temps...not bad.  Hopefully the weather will be much more cooperative come next week.
