Jumping Journal: Decemebet 28, 2007

Skipped out last night and decided not to jump even after helping to ski pack the landing hill.  The falling snow made me cave in.  I knew the conditions weren't going to be the best and I said the heck with it.  At first I was figuring that I probably wouldn't see anymore jumping until after the new year arrived.  Talked toward the end of the evening turned toward jumping this weekend.

The email sent out today indicated on the college jumpers was planning on jumping late this afternoon and then a few of us were going to be jumping tomorrow and Sunday morning and then maybe a rather rare New Year's Day jump session as well.  So far I have only jumped once on New Year's Day.

After taking care of a few other things I noticed the flashing temperature readout on the bottom of the computer screen.  I knew that meant their was some kind of weather watch or warning that had been posted by the National Weather Service.  The forecast this morning was calling for 1-4 inches of snow overnight turning to rain tomorrow with highs in the lower 40s.  I clicked and waited for the advisory to come up.  Sure enough the forecast had gotten worse.  Now it's suppose to be 3-5 inches of snow, heaviest around sunrise, turning to rain mid morning(the same time we were planning on jumping).

I kinda thought and rethought about going out and jumping with the college kid tonight.  When I saw the newest forecast I decided I definitely would go out and jump with him tonight, just hopefully he would show up.

I got up to Storrs Hill around 5:15PM and found him out helping his girl friends brother jump on the 10 meter hill.  It nice to see him getting/helping out the new jumper.  After the kid decided he had enough he headed on over to the 50 to flag both of us as we each took four jumps.

The "warmer" temperature today, only 36 for the high, had softened things up somewhat but the temperature was already back down to freezing or a degree or so below freezing when we started jumping.  The snow was trying to freeze back over.  The inrun was no near as fast as what it was Wednesday evening, not a real surprise given the fresh snow yesterday.

Each of my jumps were getting down around 30-32 meters.  It didn't seem like I had quite the spring that I had on Wednesday evening.  The last jump of the evening was LATE.  I think I was an easy 2-3 meters off the takeoff before I ever finished my kicked.

It was a nice evening, warm and humid.  I felt like I was dragging massively as I climbed the stairs for the final jump of the evening.  The weather was the main factor in me not having the energy that I normally have.  I didn't notice any real effect on any of the jumps at the takeoff like I did on Wednesday, granted that has happened just once or twice thus far in all my years of jumping.  Hopefully it will happen quite a few times before the winter is over.

It should be interesting to see if I manage to get anymore jumping in before the New Year or not.  Hopefully I will.  Last year I had 75 jumps in before New Years and I only have 28 so far this year.  Talk about depressing.

Keep the ski tips up,
