Jumping Journal: September 06, 2007

Best jumps on plastic thus far.  Warm evening for this time of the year.

After having seasonable temps the past several days, this morning was even seeming seasonable but by the time this afternoon arrived the heat had started to make its return.  The temperature got into the upper 70s to lower 80s by mid afternoon and it felt like a nice day for jumping.  So I headed on up to Storrs Hill for an evening of jumping by myself, as it turned out.

I arrived at the hill and Cannonball had just arrived, no one else was around and only one other jumper showed up, but he decided to whimp out.  I changed clothes and headed up the inrun for the first jump.  It was going to be rather unusual jumping by myself.

After soaping up and putting on the skis i head down the inrun for the first jump.  I manage a pretty decent jump.  I was a little surprised by how well it went since I hadn't jumped in two weeks as well as it being the first jump of the evening.  I was down somewhere around 17 meters.

The second goes even better getting into the 18 meter range as my timing was better than it was on the first.  I was a little late on the first jump.  I knew something felt quite unusual about the jump from the time I was in the air until I landed.  Walking back up for jump three Cannonball said that I was on time but I didn't hold the position once I was in the air.  I backed out and than tried to stiff legged land.  That helped explain why things felt so strange.

The third I ended up being slightly early, supposedly.  It seemed like I was way earlier on the second jump as compared to the third jump.  Again, I was still down around 18 meters.

The fourth jump went the best thus far of the evening.  I got the timing down and held the position nicely.  I figure I was down around 18.5 meters on that jump.

For the fifth and final jump of the evening I put everything together including some more power at the takeoff.  It was definitely the best jump I've ever had on the 25 during the summer months, by a long shot.  Everything felt like it was working like it should.  Quite an unusual jump. I ended up down at 19 meters.  I haven't come that close to the blue line before.

Hopefully the good luck streak will hold through the weekend and I may just walk off and win Dion Cup this year.  It's looking to quite possibly be an all master jump meet Sunday.  Time shall tell.  Maybe we will have to rename it to the US Masters Summer Ski Jumping Championships.
